Cars for Sale in Indiana

Indiana. If you're a racing fan, hearing that state name means that one thing immediately comes to mind: The Indianapolis 500. One of the greatest, most famed, most intense and exciting racing events in the world is held right here in the heart of one of America's most well-known cities.

The first iteration of what would become known as the Indy 500 was held in 1911, when the winner averaged 75 miles per hour and walked away with a $14,000 prize purse. Today, the average speed clocks in at over 167 miles per hour and the winner can take home as much as $1.2 million. However, a common misconception about the race is regarding its length. The "500" in the title refers not to the number of laps (which is 200), but the number of miles driven.

But even more so than just racing, automobiles are an essential element of what makes Indiana so unique. Everyone always talks about Detroit being the "Motor City," but between 1900 and 1920, more than 200 makes of cars were manufactured in the city, though many of them have gone on to become precious antiques such as the Duesenbergs, Auburns, Stutzes, Maxwells and Studebakers. Cars continue to be a huge part of life for Indiana. There are nearly 3,000 dealerships throughout the state with cars for sale, resulting in about $11.8 billion in new car sales. Drivers log an average of 13,649 miles annually using 5.6 million registered vehicles. Of course, there's a lot of driving to be done in Indiana, as the state lives up to its motto of "The Crossroads of America." It boasts more miles of interstate highway than any other in the country and as a result, more major highways will intersect in Indiana than anywhere else across the Lower 48.

Just be sure not to pass a horse while on the street. That's against the law.
