Though Irving is officially part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, it has its own unique identity. It is the 13th largest city in Texas, and includes the famous Las Colinas community. Las Colinas is one of the original master-planned developments in the U.S., and its vast area of 12,000 acres made it the largest mixed-use development in the Southwest at one point. Las Colinas is home to several large companies, including ExxonMobil, Chuck E. Cheese's, Kimberly-Clark, Michaels Stores, and others. Additionally, it is the home of the headquarters for the Boy Scouts of America. Irving tends to run a warm to hot climate. Average highs in the summer regularly reach the mid-90 degree range, while average lows in the winter drop to just below 40 degrees. The 120 degree difference between the record high of 112 degrees and the record low of -8 degrees shows the variety of weather in Irving. It also receives more than three feet of annual average precipitation, with most of that coming during May.

Since its incorporation in 1914, Irving has seen rapid population growth. The population has never grown by less than 13% from one decade to another, including the most recent decade from 2000 to 2010. The 2010 census puts Irving's population at 216,290 people, up from 191,615 people in 2000. The various corporations in Irving employ a substantial portion of the population. All of the top 10 employers in the city are in the private sector, headlined by Citigroup with 5,700 employees and Verizon with 3,260 employees. Three other companies employ 2,000 or more people.

Up until 2010, Irving was home to the Dallas Cowboys at Texas Stadium, but the team was relocated to AT&T Stadium after that. Other sports Irving features include high school football and ice hockey and a PGA Tour event at the Four Seasons Resort in Las Colinas.
