No compromise - 2004 Volvo V70 wagon
Unabashedly a premium wagon in a truck-crazy world, Volvo offers consumers the V70. Based on the P2 Large Car platform currently used by the full-size S80 sedan, the V70 is available in four versions: 2.4, 2.5T, 2.5T AWD and the T5.
Designed primarily for quintessential Volvo devotees, the V70 is for families and individuals who do not want to sacrifice driving pleasure in order to get the freedom of high functionality that they desire.
Power is generated via a trio of five-cylinder engines: 2.3L DOHC turbo (T5), 2.4L DOHC (2.4) and the new 2.5L DOHC turbo (2.5, 2.5 AWD). Torque is communicated to the pavement through one of three gearboxes: five-speed manual (2.4, T5), five-speed micro processor- controlled automatic (2.5, 2.5 AWD) or the optional five-speed "Geartronic" micro processor-controlled automatic with "Auto-stick" function.
In typical Volvo manner, the V70 represents a lot more than what meets the eye. The premium Volvo wagon advances the commitment of the automaker to mitigate the impact of automobiles on the environment. Its PremAir radiator converts up to 75 percent of the ground level ozone it encounters in oxygen. Oko-Tex certified materials are used inside the car. The V70 2.4, 2.5T and 2.5 AWD models meet the Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV) standards. The V70 T5 is classified as a Low Emission Vehicle (LEV). All Volvo V70s come with an Environmental Product Declaration, a cradle-to-grave report on the environmental management measures taken by the company in the design, manufacture, use and subsequent recycling of the car.
On the road, this Volvo is a delight to drive. Quiet, solid and sure at speed, the V70 is a secure, reassuring and stable force in an uncertain world. The suspension hardware for the V70 includes MacPherson front struts with asymmetrically-mounted coil springs and hydraulic shocks. The rear suspension is independent, with a multi-link configuration with coil springs, hydraulic shocks, stabilizer bar and a cast aluminum subframe.
The magic of the 2.5T AWD model's awesome grip is found within the all-wheel drive system. Light and compact, 95 percent of the power goes to the front wheels on dry pavement, but can transfer up to 100 percent of the power to the front or rear wheels via a viscous clutch, if the need arises.
Inside the cabin is a lot like an upscale Swiss Army Knife. Seating is the best in the industry -- I would sit in this car just for the seats! Displays and controls are so readable and operable. A third row seat is available as an option on the 2.5T model with the Titanium package.
This wagon has an endless array of items that make it much more than just an upscale wagon. It has to be experienced to appreciate its potential.
