A Return to Heritage: 2017 Jaguar F-TYPE Convertible
Introduced to the American motorist in 2013 and updated last year, the Jaguar F-TYPE convertible takes inspiration from the C-X16 concept unveiled in 2011. Available in F-Type, F-Type S and F-Type R models, power for the Jaguar two-seat droptop is generated by a trio of prime movers: a 3.0L supercharged V6, developed in base or S variants; or a newly developed 5.0L V8 supercharged power plant for the F-Type R. Torque is communicated to the street through for the supercharged V6 models through a six-speed manual gearbox, while the supercharged V8 is equipped with a ZF Quick Shift eight-speed automatic transmission, giving the driver greater control. The V6-powered S model also includes a Dynamic Launch feature, which optimizes acceleration from rest.
Featuring the most advanced iteration of Jaguar's acclaimed rigid and lightweight aluminum architecture to date, the F-TYPE has ideally balanced weight distribution that allows its involving rear-wheel drive dynamics to be explored to the full. In order to maximize the benefits of its advanced structure, the F-TYPE features all-aluminum double wishbone front and rear suspension and a quick-ratio steering rack for ultimate responsiveness. The aluminum architecture has been optimized to provide the stiffest possible underpinnings for the suspension with rigidity gains of more than 30 per cent in key areas compared to any other Jaguar application.
Inside the passenger cabin, the focus on driver involvement and sporting performance in the F-TYPE is emphasized by the 'one plus one' layout. Taking inspiration from cockpits of fighter airplanes, the controls are ergonomically grouped by function. Further aeronautical inspiration can be found in the joystick-shaped SportShift selector controlling the eight-speed transmission. The air vents on top of the dashboard will only deploy when instructed to by either the driver or complex control algorithms, staying tucked discreetly out of sight in other circumstances.
