Introducing the American motoring public to world-class driving dynamics when it originally went on sale in 1999 as a 2000 model, the Lincoln LS turns up the heat in the sport sedan category for 2003. More power and increased smoothness are the watchwords this year as Lincoln incorporates a slew of upgrades, enhancements and changes into the LS sedan.
A partial listing includes new variable valve timing for V6 and V8 engines which improves power and smoothness, electronic throttle control for accurate power delivery, ZF Servotronic II rack-and-pinion steering, new tires, revised suspension tuning, freshened exterior, improved fit-and-finish, reduced noise, vibration and harshness, electronic brake assist, HID (high intensity discharge) headlamps, standard power-adjustable pedals, new electronic parking brake and significantly improved cabin storage.
The LS is a serious driver's car that combines American luxury with world class driving dynamics and upscale appointments the automaker hopes will continue to draw a new generation of buyers into Lincoln showrooms.
Sharing its platform DNA with the Jaguar S-Type sedan, the LS is built at Lincoln's Wixom, Mich., manufacturing complex. The Lincoln sedan is available in four models: LS (base), LS Premium, LS Sport and LS Premium Sport. Engine choices include the upgraded 3.0L V-6 (LS, LS Premium) and the refined 3.9L V-8 (LS Sport, LS Premium Sport).
Both engines are bolted to a five-speed automatic transmission. A five-speed manual is not available. Sport and Premium Sport models feature the SelectShift transmission for drivers looking for a more aggressive gearbox experience. Once the gear lever is in SelectShift mode, the driver can change a gear by pushing the gear lever forward, and down a gear by pulling the gear lever back.
On the road, the impeccable road manners of the LS place it in a league with the best German sport sedans. Body roll is minimal. Power is delivered to the ground in a fluid rush, and high speed twisties are no more inconvenient than a bump in the road. This car loves to be driven hard! The stiff body structure coupled with a 50/50 weight distribution and a very elaborate suspension system deliver a powerful, solid, responsive, reassuring and substantial driving experience.
Inside the cabin, driver and passengers are coddled and spoiled by a long list of creature comforts. Electrolucent displays and large controls fall easy to hand. Seating accommodations are comfortable and roomy throughout the cabin.
Rear seat passengers are also included in the red carpet treatment. The rear armrest features dual cupholders while the 60/40 split fold-down rear seat adds versatility to the sedan's cargo space.
In short, the Lincoln LS is a performance sedan in sheep's clothing -- a solid product with plenty of upside potential. Its understated good looks is joined to over-the-top performance that must be driven -- and driven hard -- to be completely appreciated.
