In the small sedan market, the people at Chevrolet positioned the Prizm to attract consumers that have traditionally considered imports. Originally introduced in 1989 as a 1990 model under Chevy's former import-fighting Geo brand, this third generation sedan was last redesigned for the 1998 model year.

The Chevrolet Prizm is based on the Toyota Corolla sedan, built on the same assembly line by NUMMI, a twelve-year-old joint venture between General Motors and Toyota in Fremont, Calif. To paraphrase the old Zenith television ad -- the quality went in before the name went on. Quality, durability, and reliability are Prizm features that have built a strong following over the years.

Available in two trim levels -- Standard and LSi, all Prizms are powered by a 16 valve DOHC 1.8L four-cylinder engine mated to a five- speed manual transmission. Buyers have a choice between two automatic gearboxes: the (MX1) three-speed, ($495) or (MS7) four-speed, ($800). I drove an LSi with the four-speed automatic.

On the road, the sedan is powerful and responsive with plenty of power at all times. A four-wheel independent MacPherson strut suspension with coil springs and front and rear stabilizer bars and progressive ride system work with P175/65R14 or P185/65R14 (LSi) tires to make it all come together.

The additional cross-bar braces supporting the suspension cradle and the engine, make the most of the sedan's great structural rigidity. The optional transmission shifts smoothly and seamlessly.

Inside the cabin, the driver enjoys a good driving position and visibility with comfortable seating both front and rear. Displays and controls are thoughtfully laid out with the Delco sourced radio delivering totally awesome sound. The LSi features a 60/40 split rear seat to maximize cargo carrying ability.

In a nutshell, the Chevrolet Prizm sedan is cheap therapy for those looking for comfort and reassurance at the end of a long, frustrating day at the office.

By the Numbers

Engine performance numbers are 125 hp at 5,800 rpm and 125 lb/ft of torque at 4,000 rpm. EPA fuel economy ranges from 31 city/38 highway for the five-speed manual to 28 city/32 highway for the three-speed automatic using regular unleaded gasoline. Underhood fluids are easy to reach, but not consistently marked.

Standard safety/security equipment includes: dual front airbags, daytime running lights, and side impact door beams. LSi model adds remote keyless entry. Optional safety equipment includes driver and front passenger side impact airbags ($295) and four-wheel anti-lock brakes ($645). Traction control is not available.

The base Manufacturer's Suggested Retail sticker price ranges from $13,995 for the Standard model to $16,060 for the LSi. Destination charge is $465 additional. Supplies of the Prizm are improving, so color and feature choices should be increasing also.
