Augusta, Georgia is located on the fall line of the Savannah River on the border of Georgia and South Carolina. The Clarks Hill Dam on the river creates Clarks Hill Lake, just outside of Augusta. The city is best known as the site of the Masters Golf Tournament, that is held at the Augusta National Golf Club each spring. This golf course is ranked as the third best in the world. The city of Augusta is named after Princess Augusta of Saxe-Gotha, the wife of Frederick, Prince of Wales and the mother of King George III.

Augusta has nine different historic districts, including the majority of downtown Augusta. The city also has numerous recreational parks like the Riverwalk Augusta, the Augusta Canal, Phinizy Swamp Nature Park, Diamond Lakes Regional Park, and Brookfield Park. Pendleton King Park includes a dog park, an amphitheater, and beautiful gardens, while Patriots Park has fields and courts for football, soccer, baseball, softball, and tennis.

The largest industries in Augusta are medicine, biotechnology, and military. Fort Gordon is the largest employer in the city. The city is also home to a few institutions of higher education, Augusta Technical College, Georgia Regents University, Paine College, and a few satellite campuses. There are several major highways running through Augusta that link the city to Columbia, South Carolina to the east, and Atlanta, Georgia to the west. Though the main mode of transportation in Augusta is by car, parts of the city are served by the Augusta Public Transit. The city is also served by the two airports, Augusta Regional Airport and Daniel Field.
