"Stockton: All American City" is the motto of this city in California's San Joaquin Valley. It has a population of barely more than 300,000 people and sits as the county seat of San Joaquin County. Though the city has historically been an agricultural community, it has recently begun to expand into other industries like telecommunications and manufacturing. Its location relative to San Francisco and Sacramento makes it prime real estate for regional headquarters for various corporations. Sitting in a valley, Stockton can trap heat to create a fairly warm climate. Temperatures in Stockton reach average highs of more than 90 degrees in the summer and drop to only 37 degrees in the winter. Though it experiences almost 60 days of rain each year, this only adds up to a little over a foot of annual precipitation.
Stockton's population has grown steadily at a rate of close to 20% each decade since 1920. The most recent census data estimates Stockton's population at 291,707 people, though estimates claim this number has risen to above 300,000 in the four years since then. The city's main employers are government entities, as the San Joaquin County, San Joaquin County School District, California Division of Juvenile Justice, and City of Stockton provide almost 13,000 jobs total.
Though Stockton does not field any professional sports teams, they do field two minor league franchises. The Stockton Heat are an affiliate of the NHL's Calgary Flames, and the Stockton Ports are an affiliate of the MLB's Oakland A's. The city also has a vibrant Arts and Culture scene. The Stockton Symphony is the third oldest in the state, behind only San Francisco and Los Angeles. The Bob Hope Theater is a tribute to the legendary actor's ties to the city. Each year, Stockton hosts more than 30 festivals, including the San Joaquin's Children's Film Festival, the Stockton Beer Week, and the Stockton Festival of Lights and Boat Parade.
